Public Sector

We attended the Joint Union Management Industrial Committee recently (JUMIC) to push the Department of Health on issues important to you. Here are a couple of the headlines:

Medical orderlies

- We raised issues around the lack of medical imaging orderlies in ED and pushed the Department to permanently add extra staff
- We couldn’t force them to give a commitment about the change, but management revealed that they are at present planning to expand the orderlies room into the room adjacent

Repatriation Centre

- We pushed back on the Department’s plan to remove the paid meal break on afternoon shifts at the Whittle Ward
- We raised the important issue about temperate regulation across the Repatriation Centre, but particularly on P3. Management told us that it was an issue of not having air-conditioning on P3 and that facilities is currently looking into this

Medical Imaging Market Allowance

- We underscored the dire workload issues that you experience and made it clear you’d be willing to keep taking industrial action until you finally receive a market allowance. We heard from senior Health management that a minute for the market allowance from the Department has progressed and is currently sitting with the CE of the RHH.

Nursing and Allied Health

– We pushed management to reveal the true extent of nursing vacancies in the state service, revealing that there are 431 vacancies. We have followed up with the EDON to get a more detailed breakdown by stream
- We pushed the cause of pharmacists on 8A and let the Department know that you are under the pump and will need continued support while you onboard new workers

Food Services and Environmental Services

- Management provided an update around getting a roof on the compactor, advising that they are currently awaiting a quote from the architect. They also let us know that we can expect a change proposal soon about changes in reporting lines for Infection Control
- We pushed for more answers about the new Cambridge Food Production Centre and received a commitment that they will meet with us soon to discuss members’ concerns such as the lack of space at the existing facility.
